Fergus, a nearly 90 kg Irish wolfhound, lived with his owners in Nashville, Tennessee. Everything was perfect in his life until a car struck him and his owner Mickey McKay at a city intersection on January 30.
Due to the impact, poor Fergus was sent flying through the air and, dazed by the situation, he fled the scene. Mickey and his wife were unharmed, but their hearts shattered when they realized their beloved dog had vanished.
“Within 30 minutes of the accident, people were covering the entire area trying to help us find Fergus. We had rescue teams involved with feeding stations set up, and we were doing everything we could to follow the leads,” said Mickey’s daughter, Meredith Lucket.
From that evening onwards, an incessant search began to locate the lost pet. Fergus was very beloved in his community, and more than 200 people joined the Facebook group “Find Fergus” that Meredith had created.
As the saying goes, where there’s a will, there’s a way, and the strategy finally paid off.
The news spread like wildfire, but they still couldn’t locate their beloved pet. Days passed, and the family had no sign of Fergus, and many began to lose hope.
“At any given moment, two miles from the accident site, cars were driving with flashing lights, and traffic was slowing down. It was incredible,” said Mickey’s daughter.
“They saw him limping towards the Judson Baptist Church immediately after the accident,” Meredith wrote.
After several days of searching, it seemed that all hope had been lost. However, a call revived their spirits. A neighbor claimed to have found Fergus, and the whole family was eager for the reunion.
This was the first time they identified Fergus on the streets:
“Early this morning, they contacted us with the news that Fergus had been found 8 km southwest of the accident site,” Meredith recounted.
The reunion with Fergus was captured in a beautiful video that quickly brought tears to the eyes of everyone on social media.
For those who have pets at home, it’s only natural to put themselves in the shoes of these people and feel the happiness that the Lucketts experienced in that moment.
Meredith couldn’t help but shed tears when she saw her dog again. As for the dog, he wagged his tail, snuggled up on her shoulder, and howled with happiness.

“He’s definitely a gentle giant. He’s a bit of a diva and loves being inside, which is one of the reasons we were so afraid he’d be outside. Definitely a spoiled pet,” the young woman said.
After the reunion, Fergus was taken to a veterinarian to confirm his health. Fortunately, his large size saved him from any broken bones. He was just hungry and neglected during the days he was lost.
If it weren’t for the collective effort in this case, Fergus would still be lost and at risk on the streets. His story once again reaffirms the power of social media.
